Santa Cruz Composite is a high school cross country mountain bike racing team. The goal of this team is to develop those already riding mountain bikes into racers or better racers, and allow those who have not ridden mountain bikes to explore this avenue of athletic activity. We provide available assistance to those in need, and our overall goal is to produce a lifetime rider, no matter what the level or the specific biking discipline.
For the 2011-2012 season, the team will again be led by Kevin Giberson, Chris Sandoval, and David Giannini, with thegoal of adding new riders to the team, reaching out to Monterey County if possible, providing different riding opportunities, and having fun. We use top level training plans that vary according to rider experience and desire.
Outside of any team sponsored or sanctioned event, the coaches independently go on regular weekend rides usually beginning in mid-September of each year. These rides are not practices or races, but are for fun and usually in our local mountains, with a few to other areas depending on the coordination and availability of vehicles to transport everyone.
Once we get to December, it is time for team practices to begin and they are usually three days per week. For those riders wanting to compete at a higher level, we do provide optional additional training information.
Our coaching staff has a diverse background with mentoring provided from various ages, and our program provides coaches that have learned how to coach over many years. Our coaches have been successful coaching juniors and youth in mountain biking, cyclocross, soccer, inline hockey, and baseball, with improvement throughout the seasons and success at the highest levels. Our coaches have also participated in mountain biking, downhill mountain biking, surfing, wrestling, martial arts, baseball, soccer, football, weightlifting, track and field, cross country running, mountaineering, skateboarding, tennis, golf, and volleyball. Thus we have coaches that know sports, know coaching, and know biking. All coaches are required to have criminal background checks, gain their 16-hour Wilderness First Aid certification, gain a CPR certification, and take coaching continuing education courses provided through the NICA mountain biking leagues.
To provide this wonderful opportunity for our racers, the team relies on sponsors and donor contributions to finance the expense of race entry fees, coach certifications and training, travel, uniforms, food, and equipment for the riders. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
If you are interested in joining or sponsoring theteam, please send an email to kevin@giberson.net.
